most of the album is just the usual filler but i'd say roll on john is a great song. maybe he just had that one and built the rest of the album around it. he'd obviously been doing the research, the detective work, for a long time.

So...this Bob show tonight... About halfway through the second song, I already knew tomorrow's headline: WHOLLY UNLIT DYLAN GIVES ROUSING PERFORMANCE BEHIND HUGE PILE OF DEBRIS! Really though...what the FUCK, Bob? He's really taken the whole "becoming a recluse on stage" to dizzying new heights with his new stage accoutrement, which is mostly a collection of old mirrors but includes a few other pieces of shit strewn about the stage. Of course, most of it is piled up about four feet tall right in front of Bob. The venue is basically a theater, we were all the way back...the people in our area basically had the best view...I can't imagine that anyone in the front section had much to look at for most of the night. So here's Bob: This is how he appeared to the audience for 90% of the show. Here's how it all looks together...everyone well lit except Bob (this shot is a little overexposed, the one above is a better indication of what it actually looked like). Bob was super pissy tonight, something must have happened...he didn't come center stage nearly as much as he normally does these days (I think) and when he did come out for a verse or two of Tangled, he dragged the mic stand back about three feet...not that it wasn't halfway upstage as it was...then there was no second "formation" after the encore...the song just ended and Bob walked away without so much as a glance or creepy hand gesture. Oh, hey, look who showed up. Really though...my wife and I were entertained (to a degree) because we're used to Bob being a fucking nut, but...I sat there tonight and couldn't stop imagining what everyone else in the crowd was thinking. Totally unprofessional bullshit. You've seen Bob lose his voice, now come see him lose his marbles.

Oh, note the large women's purse in the pile of debris in front of the piano.

Bob's Rolling Stone interview...better than the album. Lots of laughs. He actually calls the "plagiarism" crowd pussies.

Good on him.
It's one thing if it was someone listening to boby and saying 'say, that line rings of Timrod'.
It's another thing to type new boby lyrics into Google for 'gotcha' purposes. That would make a person a pussy.

he's right, stealing lyrics is not a big deal, the problem lies with the music

Someone on the ER forum ponders the fact that Long and Wasted Years wasn't referenced in any early reviews/reports.
Maybe it's because most critics don't have any sort of palate for Bob and can't recognize the real thing when they hear it.

I've been playing the new boby for a while and I haven't been reaching for the skip button. I don't love it, but there's plenty to like. 'Duquesne Whistle'--apparently Bob thinks the world needs another fucking train song. A much better opener than 'Political World', but no 'Wiggle Wiggle'. 'Soon After Midnight' gets extra points for keeping Mr. Wolfman low in the mix. 'Narrow Way' doesn't offer much, but it don't offend me either. Like a lot of stuff here, it could lose a few verses. 'Long And Wasted Years'--'Brownsville Girl' minus the horseshit. 'Pay In Blood'--There are a few clunker lines that bug me here. I dunno… 'Pay in blood? I can get it for you wholesale bubbie!' 'Scarlet Town' and 'Tin Angel' are pretty decent flashlight in the face ghost story boby songs. In the song 'Tempest' I was hearing the lyric 'Jim Backus smiled' in the 43rd verse. Various lyric transcriptions on the net have him singing 'Jim Dandy smiled'. As a result I like this song much less. If the LP has a dog, this is it. 'Roll On John' leaves me cold….all that slaves and rags shit…'slow down you move too fast' is a Paul Simon lyric ferchistsakes. Maybe he's transfigurating John. As much as I cry about boby wallowing in lazy ass 12 bar, I find myself really enjoying 'Early Roman Kings'. I like it when he sings lines like 'ding dong daddy' and 'distributing the corn'. Funny stuff.

For those who aren't paying attention, Bob is seven shows into his fall tour and thus far there has been ONE performance of a Tempest song (a ratty-sounding Scarlet Town from opening night).
I have to LOL at the guys who undoubtedly shelled out $1k+ to fly over from Europe to see catch the first "Tempest shows"

Usually a song from a new LP is time for a pee break when you're seeing old sixties guys in concert.

Good point...so what's the moral to be drawn here...that his new material is that good...that his performances of his old material are that bad...or that I and lots of other people are just too interested in this stuff?

Usually a song from a new LP is time for a pee break when you're seeing old sixties guys in concert. Or in the case of one of Neil's songs (who I saw the other week), a pee break, a beer break, a cigarette if you're into that sort of thing, a visit to the merch stand, a 2nd beer, and you'll STILL get the last 4 minutes of the song. 22 minutes of new Neil in one song. Wow. (And then another new one a few songs was 16 minutes. High comedy.) Tbf, they were actually both reasonably decent tunes, and it was worth it to see the "CINNAMON GIRL, WOOOO!" brigade get frustrated and leave.
