there's quite a funny thread over at expecting rain about the new album. a guy posted an early review and all the dorks went crazy calling it an obvious fake, etc. anyway, uncut did a genuine review which didn't say much but now they've updated it with this: Just a follow up to my post earlier this week about the new Bob Dylan album, around which a certain excitement seems to be accumulating. As I mentioned, the album features ten new Dylan songs that I can now give titles to, including “Roll On John”, the album’s closing track, a wistful tribute to John Lennon that quotes lines from several Beatles songs, including “Come Together” and “A Day In The Life”. so it looks like the original review wasn't fake after all. check it out here: expectingrain.com/discussions/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=70893

criky serious dorkness going down in that thread...lennon hatred, people asking what the consensus is, dorks with fears that bob may actually address them in song (lets hope bob gets into put down mode on that one).
hehe...ive just asked for apologies to be made to the reviewer

I get the feeling that these early Roman kings are living in the land of Nod.
I might even go so far as to speculate that they're dripping with garlic and olive oil.

maybe the biggest change around in music history - from one of the best and most inventive artists to the worst possible artist that you can be.

The singer-songwriter is occasionally shown walking down the street at night with a posse that includes a guy dressed up as Gene Simmons circa 1977.
A posse? More like a douche crew, haw!
Kinda catchy...I think I'll call it 'Dooky Whistle'.

Hey, this is pretty good.
I wish his voice wasn't so painful sounding on some songs, but...what are you going to do...
Halfway through the album and Long and Wasted Years is giving Duquesne Whistle a run for its money as best track. Maybe the most unusual thing Bob has recorded since...Brownsville Girl? I dunno. But I'll be damned if it doesn't sorta hit the spot.
ETA: Okay, done...so, the other problem here (aside from the voice) is that the 2 hour song about the Titanic is totally disposable and the song about John Lennon is yet further proof that Bob sucks at eulogizing people...he always ends up sounding so phony.

Thanks for the leaky linky Cat.
I pretty much agree with you on all points so far P dog.
I'll burn a copy listen to it in my car until I can't stand it anymore...hopefully something will stick that I enjoy.
Bob sucks at eulogizing people... Sho nuff, sho nuff, heh heh....cuttin' off babies' heads.

Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't praise Lennon for not skull fucking the neighbor's cat or something...really though, even his nonumsical eulogizing comments about other guys...always sound over the top and phony.

well whaddya know....he's starting to write tunes again. well there's a few in there. after midnight is his best tune since mississippi , long and wasted years hits the spot alright, pretty decent on first hearing. extra marks for originality. is he referring to his last 3 or 4 albums....
tempest is funny for the shear delight it takes in its unoriginality
roll on john, well i wasnt expecting bridge over troubled water, need a de-marbilising translator to understand the words, its a song about lennon so its cool...guess the irony is if he was still alive he'd be slating bob's albums in interviews

Just bought tickets for my first Bob show in over four years...from a stoner type in a college parking lot after dark. Just like the good old days.
Between this and the album...not for nothing, but I'll be carrying my Seven Seals™ brand frog umbrella for the next few days.

Thanks Cat. Seems like everyone thinks the title track is a real monster...I don't get it. I liked this reveiw: www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-bob-dylan-tempest-review-20120906,0,1339260.story For a second there I was, like, am I here all alone and stuff? I do like how it's not about the Titanic so much as it is some dream Bob had the night he saw the movie Titanic and then ate...bad shellfish or whatever. I mean, I like the thought of it. To actually listen to the resulting song...meh.

twas the one good laugh on the record..14 mins of the most basic music of all time....when he plays it live, it will be like he's dropping a big doodle on the audience...
