In Which We Serve, along with other WW2 service dramas like The Way Ahead and The Way to the Stars, were influenced to some extent by Jennings, but in the end I don't think Lean or Coward had much to do with the British New Wave. Their films looked different and were interested in different things.
Two films I might have mentioned as being similar but didn't were The Bells Go Down (which was Ealing anyway) and the Launder-Gilliatt portrait of the homefront, Millions Like Us.

just for conk, i'd say: 09 Jan 12 : Simon Heffer on British War Films - The Cruel Sea Wed, 11 Jan 12 Duration: 15 mins Simon Heffer celebrates the British war films which were made after the end of the war, in the 1950s, and marked a new, more realistic treatment of events. 1.The Cruel Sea downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio3/essay/essay_20120111-1822a.mp3

It will be released on monday. There was one major scene cut out in 1971, about 5 minutes long, and it's STILL cut out after 40 years, way to go Warner Brothers. Good thing is that you'll see it in the bonus section of the DVD, in the documentary "Hell on earth".
I'm super excited about this, for years and years I only had a lousy VHS copy, then the lousy VHS-ripped DVD... and I was still blown away. Now these screenshots look fab.
