last great director of the italian golden generation died today. jumped out of the hospital window. 5th floor. good way to go if you're 95. if anybody is interested i'd recommend getting hold of the dvd of "i soliti ignoti".

He directed two of my favourite Italian films, Big Deal on Madonna Street and The Organizer.

big deal on madonna street is "i soliti ignoti". the original title is much more beautiful: the usual nobodies.

The episode directed by Wim Wenders isn't bad. The rest of them pretty much suck, particularly Scorsese's.

just watched a dvd of the king's speech. load of old bollocks. it's just a "miracle worker", a close genre cousin of a "pygmalion". it was so fucking boring i had to really try hard not to press the eject button before the end.

Werner Herzog Fri, 25 Mar 11 Duration: 28 mins Francine Stock discusses cave art with the veteran German director Werner Herzog and quizzes Kevin MacDonald about The Eagle, a version of Rosemary Sutcliff's classic book. There's also an interview with Brian Cox about two of his favourite films and the sound designer, Matt Wand, offers us a glimpse into the world of the Foley artist - the people who not only make Marilyn's heels go clickety clack and Clint's horses go cloppity clop but invite us to dream. downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/film/film_20110325-1711a.mp3

couple movie reviews...
the hitch-hiker's guide to the galaxy. question: can a radio show succesfully transfer to cinema? answer... no. unfunny shit, i stopped watching after 30 mins, and i'm a douglas adams fan. another question: is science fiction the worst possible genre for parody? didn't woody nail it definitively with sleeper? is it really worth trying to top that one?
the social network. great movie. flawed masterpiece (they shouldn't have done that hayley mills one actor playing two brotheres schtick, it never works). great script, great acting from the guy who played the guy who invented facebook. this guy was born to play johnny rotten. hope someone's writing the script before he gets too old.
