I'm of two minds about this one. I thought his last film was just a so-so remake of 12 Angry Men. As for this one, did Burnt By the Sun really need a sequel? Why not make something original instead? Still, it's Mikhalkov . . .

"... did Burnt By the Sun really need a sequel?" - at first I thought "dear God, NO!", but like you said, it's Mikhalkov and looks like he came up with something interesting. I remember old threads on IMDB, from 2006, with photos from the set - looked quite impressive. I can't believe it's finally finished (there is a THIRD part as well, which will be released in october). Here's the official trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNHtHk25lHA

Coming up at Montreal's Fantasia Festival in July:
A man responsible for equally outrageous genre fare, director Ken Russell, will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at a special “Devil’s Night” presentation also including a rare 35mm showing of his 1971 shocker THE DEVILS. The man behind the likes of ALTERED STATES, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM and GOTHIC will be in Montreal for a week and further celebrated with a lengthy retrospective of his work, divided between the city’s Cinematheque Quebecoise and Cinema Du Parc.
As long as I don't have to watch Tommy again . . .

I like Dead of Night well enough, but it wouldn't make my list of top 50 (or even 100) scary films. Cavalcanti's best film is actually Went the Day Well.
It's a little odd. When I was growing up, those Ealing films from the 40s and 50s were considered classics (and still are by me!) and everybody interested in movies had seen at least some of them. But now they're largely forgotten, at least over here. Besides Cavalcanti, some other Ealing directors worth remembering were Alexander Mackendrick, Robert Hamer, Henry Cornelius and Charles Crichton.

hehehe... the scene where the woman from alien is dying and "the people" are trying to save her with their "power" is a rip off from the tinkebell scene in peter pan.
cue me in here, is this a kid's film?

this is just for the conkster really but i suppose our esl guys could enjoy it as a free weekly english lesson. it's a weekly bbc radio film programme in the form of a free mp3 (podcast: i hate that fucking word): www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/filmi found it pretty boring so conky will love it.

This has been in the works for a good while now, but there's a solid release date and photos now. www.collider.com/2010/10/04/the-thing-movie-images-set-visit-prequel/www.aintitcool.com/node/46868I should probably be more skeptical, but everything I've heard about it sounds cool - great sets, minimal computerized bullshit, etc. This can never live up to the original, but at least it's a prequel and not a sequel. I absolutely do not want to know what happened to McCreedy and Childs. Always wanted to hear the Norwegians story, though. Dag sez there are lot of good norwegian actors in it.
