i think they're making a mistake sticking with the r&b stuff. it was ok while they were learning to play but it's all been a bit overdone. r&b even means something different now. if you want to describe what bo diddley played you have to say rhythm and blues. r&b is some commercial shite. why don't we just forget it and listen to the originals?
what would be really cool is to play the beatles songs that they never got round to doing live. not like a cover band, though, just good versions of a couple of songs each concert in between their own stuff. let's face it the beatles is to them what bo was to the stones. noel understood that.

yea i agree with most of that. they peaked long before the english rock aristocracy even heard of them. when i saw them first in cavan they were playing a great mix of stuff. they did the best version of "rain" by anyone, weller included. (i think i posted the mp3 here before). then all of a sudden they just concentrated solely on the "r&b" stuff. while live they are pretty impressive, musically they go up a cul da sac of 12 bar blues. now they will tell you that the rolling stones started out doing nothing else and it did them no harm. (although they were into more soulful stuff like arthur alexander and marvin gaye as well) part of me writes them off at this stage but i dont wanna put my neck over the line. i was gettin worried that they might paint themselves into a corner and then i heard the guitar player singing this , a pretty decent acoustic song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxdpd8kOD_sand the drummer talking about hank williams which i was surprised at. i do accept they are a novelty coz of their age and that may be why gallagher and weller and co dig them , when they start growing beards they will really have to prove their worth. one things for sure, if they dont make great new music in the next few years then it will tell us something about the limitations on new music, that 98% of it has been done already and there is little or no scope for great original stuff. (until some mad nut comes along that is, but those guys are unlikely to be signed up anytime soon)
