nice find. terrible song. i'd say john ripped off two lines rather than the whole middle eight and turned it into something far superior. i'd put it in the same category as "i'd rather see you dead little girl". homage rather than plagiarism.

I came across this today-- East Side of Town by Melinda Marx on YouTube. It's Groucho's daughter doing a pretty obvious 'Downtown' rip, but it's a good song. If only they had altered the lyric just the tiniest little bit, no one would have known it was a 'Downtown' rip. Nice slightly haunting Shangri-la's kinda thing happening. I dig it the most.
