They both sound like rewrites of Stagger Lee, but then a lot of songs do . . .

Hoy, hoy! I was doing a little research on Stick McGhee and found out that there's an earlier version of 'Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee' that he and his brother Brownie recorded for Harlem Records in 1946. It wasn't a hit until two years later when it was redone for Atlantic Records. The Atlantic version is probably a better record, but this earlier version is pretty cool. Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee

This is really more of a complaint than a 'can you dig this' kind of thing. I saw that Sinatra did 'Macarthur Park' and knew I had to hear it. Win/win, right? Wrong. Macarthur Park-Frank SinatraIt turns out he only does one section of the song. As a rule, anything Frank does is ok with me, but this was a real pussy maneuver. If you're not gonna take the cake out in the rain, stay the hell out of the park, Frankie Wankie.

Claude Demetrius
not a well known name but he may have been the real instigator of rock n roll, plus he wrote exclusively about chicks.
cant find a picture of him but here are a few tasty songs from his pen:
aint that just like a woman (chuck copied the riff, boby copied the title)
mean woman blues
hard headed woman
he also wrote the film open the door, richard

I just stumbled across the coolest instrumental....I don't really know much about it. It's from this collection of Norman Petty produced instrumentals. I'm gonna guess it's from '66. Camelback--Chances

killing floor. back in the late 60s-early70s killing floor was a live staple of any blue men singing the whites: there's a famous cream/hendrix story based on it. the first version i ever heard was this the electric flag, killing floor, 1968: www.sendspace.com/file/bgtnkqi had it on this album en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rock_Machine_Turns_You_Ona sampler from cbs which was a big hit in england and let you hear stuff from american bands you'd never actually dare to buy (albums were expensive and dangerous - there was usually only one good track on them). so thanks to the sampler i heard the one good track on albums by spirit, moby grape, the peanut butter conspiracy, taj mahal, blood sweat and tears... that's mike bloomfield playing guitar for the electric flag. i didn't know this at the time, of course, as the information highway was still a wolf-infested path through the woods. and talking of wolves, here's the original howling wolf, killing floor, 1966: www.sendspace.com/file/4zd66f

Johnny "Guitar" Watson - Space Guitar www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVsNlchp0GE&feature=relatedI dont know if he's been mentioned on youtube thread or not but anyway this guy was doing hendrix and page stuff back in 1954. from wiki: Watson's ferocious "Space Guitar" of 1954 pioneered guitar feedback and reverb. Watson would later influence a subsequent generation of guitarists. Frank Zappa, for example, would cite Watson as one of his all-time favorite guitarists.

the guy (miles of Int Times) only remembers a few, but basically, Zappa played DJ for a night. Apart from the above 2, the only other ones mentioned are :
The Starlites - Valerie The Gladiolas - Little Darlin The Spaniels - Goodnight Sweetheart The Thrillers - The Drunkard
he also mentions Da Doo Ron Ron
He was gonna release a golden oldies compilation but there were legal problems and most of the record companies that released them were gone
