has there ever been a top hole artist who died before he could produce his greatest work? can't think of one myself. maybe joyce. he was only 59 and probably had another great book in him. they say he was contemplating one about the ocean.
if there isn't one it could mean that great artists live long lives and the ones that die early are crap.
maybe being a great artist gives you the desire to survive?

Maybe Buddy Holly would have become a creepy Paul Anka type....maybe Eddie Cochran would have ended up a fat drunk.

Gogol, without a question... why did you burn it! Why!

like, did I nail it or what?
the guy writes his greatest work (according to few chosen friends he read the manuscripts to); Dead Souls pt. 2 (the idea was that this time he'll show all that it's good and worthy in Russia instead of its dark side in pt. 1, the dead souls resurrecting); goes a bit funny in the head all of a sudden - burns it all - dies couple of days later from hunger.
Ukranian cunt.
My fav writer.

yeah, good call on buddy. i'd leave eddie out cos he could never have got out of that one riff. buddy was on his way to carving out the perfect 60s pop song.
gogol had gone insane just before he died so he doesn't count. if you go insane you've passed your peak, i'd say.

I see Hendrix ending up like Carlos Santana. Getting religion and making boring records with guys like John McLaughlin.

I dunno, I see him as an old blues guy on the stage playing, sitting on a chair.
No wait!
I see him as a cool shaman.

otis redding could have done some seriously good stuff
robert johnson in the 40s and 50s - who knows?
"maybe being a great artist gives you the desire to survive?"
and maybe most guys who die young just know they have nothing left to write. but guys who die in a plane crash or are poisoned dont really count.
if noel had died in 97, people would still be saying the third album would have been the best album ever.

"making boring records with guys like John McLaughlin"
jimi was more or less doing that before he died. he peaked after purple haze for me.

Not tope hole perhaps and the cult of Jeff Buckley is one of life's irritations but he was talented enough to have made a truly great record, if his ego could have allowed it.
In a similar vein, Cobain would have done something great
