Thanks Nick... here also -- www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00vkxqwAn iconic pair of boots turns fifty this year: the Doc Martens. Sarfraz Manzoor tells a story which weaves through British politics, fashion and music. Originally designed as practical footwear for workers such as postmen or policemen, Doc Martens were to capture the imagination of the many waves of British youth. As they were adopted by different sub cultures across the UK, so they came to represent what it meant to be young, urban and British in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Even today they retain their popularity and prized status, one of the few things still worn despite all changes in fashion and youth culture. In the programme, Pete Townshend, one of the first people to wear Doc Martens on the stage in 1967, reflects on what they meant to him. "I bought a white boiler suit and these working boots. I remember on the label it said something like, 'the soles of these shoes will resist all kinds of dangerous chemicals'. As soon as I put them on I felt released from psychedelia and all the nonsense that went with it." Presenter Sarfraz Manzoor also meets up with members of the band Madness, talking to them about their use of Doc Martens and the skinhead following that came in their wake in the 1980s. He'll look at rebellion, Thatcherism, and urban life in Britain. Sarfraz also meets an unexpected fan of the boots in Tony Benn, who valued the fact that they were so tough when he went on many political marches. The last word is with Pete Townshend. "There would sometimes be a couple of things I would take to bed with me, other than what you'd expect a rock star would take to bed. One would be a cognac bottle and the other would be a Doc Marten boot. I was extremely fond of my boots.".

"Roger Daltry, 25, and Pete Townsend, 23, of the Who turn themselves in to police at the Fifth St. stationhouse. Both were charged with the assault of Tactical Patrol Force cop Daniel Mulhearn (right) during a show at the Fillmore East. Mulhearn was trying to clear the theater because of a fire in the next door. Not knowing he was a cop, the band members thought he was causing trouble and threw him out of the building. Daltry and Townsend were released on their own recognizance and later fined $75."

Shaun Usher of Letters of Note fame (who brought to our attention a pre-man hands Madonna's 1991 letter in which she had some non-flattering things to say about Chicago men) shared a 1969 letter from Who leader Pete Townshend, written on stationery, where he raved about a previous concert he played in Chicago with the Kinks. Townshend expresses his admiration and respect for Ray Davies and company throughout the message, capped by this. "Anyway, I'm carrying their record with me, but haven't a record player with me unfortunately. It really does do things for me." It appears that the gig to which Townshend was referring was a Halloween night 1969 gig at the Kinetic Playground. The Kinks hadn't played Stateside since 1964, thanks to an incident where Ray Davies punched a Musicians Union employee. By the time the legal issues related to that were settled, it set them back considerably here and The Who, who opened for The Kinks in England when they started out, wound up headlining the gig in Chicago. Townshend recognized the reversal of fortunes and announced from the stage, “in the old days, we used to dream about opening for The Kinks. So its come to this. This show’s for them.” When the original Kinetic Playground opened in 1968 at 4812 N. Clark St., it quickly became one of the most important musical venues in the city, hosting acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and The Who. It's interiors were also filmed for the film Medium Cool. It suffered substantial damage in a fire on November 8, 1969 and never re-opened. Owner Aaron Russo continued to promote rock shows in the Midwest and eventually helmed the early career of Bette Midler. chicagoist.com/2011/07/12/pete_townshend_writes_about_playing.php

"On 23 february 1967, The Who begin a tour of Italy performing at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Turin. This is followed by two shows on the 24th at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Bologna. On the 25th, they proceed to the Palalido in Milan for two shows and end at a music fest with eight other acts at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome where the second show is cancelled due to poor ticket sales. A 10:30pm show at The Piper Club in Rome is squeezed in. The opening act through the tour is the English expatriate group The Primitives. The Who will not return to Italy for over five years."

I had an incredible conversation once with Paul McCartney. The difference between the way Lennon and McCartney behave with the people that are around them is incredible. What Lennon does is he sits down, immediately acknowledges the fact that he’s John Lennon and that everything for the rest of the night is going to revolve around him. He completely relaxes and let’s everybody feel at ease and just speaks dribble little jokes, little rubbish like he’s got, In His Own Write and little things. Like he’ll start to dribble on and get stoned and do silly things and generally have a good time. Of course everybody gets into his thing and also has a generally good time.
But Paul McCartney worries, he wants a genuine conversation, a genuine relationship, starting off from square one: “We’ve got to get it straight that we both know where we’re both at before we begin.” One of them is fucking Paul McCartney, a Beatle, the other one is me, a huge monumental Beatle fan who still gets a kick out of sitting and talking to Paul McCartney. And he’s starting to tell me that he digs me and that we’re on an even par so that we can begin the conversation which completely makes me even a bigger fan. That’s all it serves to do. The conversation comes to no purpose and all he serves to do is to confuse himself. He’s trying to say, “Oh, you know, you know where you’re at. I know where I’m at, we’re both really just us and let’s talk.” So what do you say? “I’m a fantastic fan of yours, man.” He really tries to get it together often and you’ve got to relax, you’ve got to take people...

Thanks for the report. Is there a 'Pagel' type site that reports the set lists for this tour? Not that the setlist is gonna change. How about 'Magic Bus' fuckers!
Shortly after the concert ended, Simon Townshend, second guitarist and Pete’s brother, tweeted “Pete walked off tonight because it was too loud.”
You'd think that Petey had enough clout to get the volume turned down....or that he's tech savvy enough to find the volume knob himself. Silly cunt.

It's not quite bagel's site, but... www.setlist.fm/setlists/the-who-bd6bd2a.htmlSeeing the almighty Quad twice in a few weeks, in ottawa and montreal. Really looking forward to it. But a nice little 'substitute' in the encore would be gladly accepted as well.
