The lesson, as always: Dave Gilmour makes things better.*** (Apparently Roger Waters skipped that lesson before the "hey, I'll go on tour and play dark side of the moon by myself!" idea popped into his head.) I have two or three of those re-releases. At some point, I suppose I should get around to getting the rest of them. ***NB: I don't actually believe this.

PBS showed The Who Live at Kilburn last night. This is the footage that was shot for The Kids Are Alright documentary, and the second to last proper Who show. Great stuff. They weren't firing on all cylinders that night (Moonie was the weak link) but it wasn't for lack of trying. Out on DVD in November with lots of kewl extras and a '69 show.
Here's what Dave Marsh said about the show: The Kilburn show was a disaster. Moon hadn't practised 'in three years' (in John's words), and he was a nervous wreck, distraught at having to face a public appearance in such gruesome physical condition. For the first time, there was no way to conceal his weaknesses: They showed in his potbelly and in his playing. The rest of the band was almost as nervous - it had been fourteen months since Toronto. 'That was the first time I can remember being drunk before a show,' said Entwistle. Between their ragged playing and the necessity of stopping and starting while camera angles and lenses were changed, the show was such a negative experience that no one could have blamed them if none of the Who ever took a stage again."

I thought Moonie was pretty tight on that show. Gotta love that shinny purple pajamas he was wearing. But really, he didn't seem to miss any of the rolls or anything. The whole band looked pretty good. The film quality was excellent too. I luckily caught it last night. Great footage.

I noticed Keith starting to lose the plot during Pinball Wizard....all he was doing was rolls and fills while missing the downbeat. The fun part was watching Pete get silently exasperated. The My Generation jam had Trousers playing almost all by himself onstage at one point, where usually Pete, John & Keith could read each other's minds and make that Who magic. I enjoyed watching it cuz Townshend was working extra hard with the jumping and windmills to try and make up for everything.

London Coliseum, 14 December 1969!? Finally!! (couple of years ago Lerner promised on his site that this one and the Kilburn '77 will make a bonus disc to his documentary)

Well, he might've missed some I was pretty drunk at the time, and I'm not an expert Who fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. You're right about Pete too, he was amazing.

potentially interesting conundrum here. check out these two versions of i'm a boy: www.sendspace.com/file/4kaekjwww.sendspace.com/file/hw75inthe first is what i've always taken to be the original record. the second is a shorter version (1 minute less, the instrumental section more or less cut out) sonically more dynamic with enhanced stereo sound (you can hear a lot of cool drum and guitar work that's lost in the mix on the long version. any ideas?

The second version is the original single. The longer version was first released on the Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy LP.
In other Who news, the deluxe version of Sell Out never came out.

Sez it's out next week up here in soviet canuckistan, so you guys should have it soon, if not already. (Meanwhile the bob remasters got delayed two weeks up here and the new pete(r) doherty album is impossible to find. My kingdom for a good record store.)

Got the DVD from Amazon few days ago, looks great - of course I'm more interested in the '69 show. Official trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgqeakDfVOU"... and now you can finally see the last concert appearance of drummer Keith Moon" Who are these morons who make trailers? His last concert appearance was 5 months after this one, 25 may 1978, at Shepperton Studios. Of course, it'll sell more copies this way... Oh and here's a new vid of Moon the loon, great stuff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPsJ7BilWLg&feature=relatedHe looks quite sober and normal, but I couldn't understand a word those kids were saying. Nick?
