last time i talked to him he had his internet disconnected and was forced to go outside and go into an internet cafe where some slav nerds were hanging out. havent heard from him since.

most likely scenario is that the internet cafe had its connection terminated.

what about getting rid of the two blank squares? can we change the actual skeletal structure (there has to be techno name for this) of the site?

To get rid of the inner column:
admin -> headers and footers -> select "global header/footer" -> in the "footer" field, paste this code:

As far as the border thickness goes, the default setting is as thin as you can get without removing them completely. If you want to get rid of them, paste this script into the global footers field, beneath the other two:
