Excellent. Exactly what I was looking for. I think I'll finish off the U.S. year, and then go hunting for Max Bygraves, Cliff Richard and Tommy Steele material on Youtube . . .
Some crazy black guy on a crossroads in Minnesota playing power chords with windmill strokes.
Thanks for the Coasters 'Besame'.
I think that Lewisohn and the other Beatles scholars got it wrong saying that The Coasters version was the one...first off, The Coasters version doesn't have the all important 'cha cha boom' and secondly the vocal arrangement is significantly different.
Many years ago I saw 'The Coasters' at this club....it was fucking great! Steve Douglas! was on saxophone that night...I got to talk to him between sets...nice guy. I have no idea about the original member content--there were 2 guys who looked old enough...I didn't care....I drank a lot and they did 'Yakety Yak' three times by request.....it was awesome....I was right in front and the bass singer *sang right at me*.
yes the coasters one sounds nothing like the beatles version. either paul heard it first from the coasters and did his own version of it or as manho says he heard it from his dad.
nice work on the townshend/cochran link guys.
been listening to this song a lot lately and i think it could well have been a blueprint for pauls "shes a woman". couple of different versions of it. its a willie dixon song but he got it from Sister Rosetta Tharpe changing "this train" to "my babe" (and rosetta tharpe probably got it from someone else and so on....)
