I forgot to say, but my pick of this week's batch is Baby Be Mine, another Jeff Barry-Ellie Greenwich girl group classic. Great songs were just pouring out of the Brill Building at this point.

"Beatles '65 came out in '64 too"
ok, i get it, it's a marketing thing. we didn't have marketing over in england in the early 60s. even as late as autumn 66 the spencer davis group were releasing an album called "autumn 66". i guess in america it would have been "summer 68", right?

Another fine Red Bird Record.
Wiki sez: Red Bird Records was a record label started by legendary American pop music songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1964 to highlight the girl-group sound. The label's first release was "Chapel of Love" by the The Dixie Cups, which quickly reached number one. Eleven of the first 30 singles released by Red Bird reached the Top Forty. The Shangri-Las' "Leader of the Pack" was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 that same year

Peter and Gordon - I Don't Want To See You Again
Probably the worst song that Paul & John fobbed off on Penis & Gordo.

baby love. sheer genius. so direct. prince was obviously listening to this. i remember loving it even tho my ideology was telling me it was just pop crap. there was something deep and unnerving about it.

It's an insanely catchy and upbeat song with seriously downbeat lyrics.
"All you do is treat me bad/ Break my heart and leave me sad"

Hard to top anything with Lorne Green on vocals but I agree with conk. The Tokens original of 'He's In Town' has the truer falsetto but this one ain't bad.
I think that shortly afterward Congress passed a law making it illegal to write songs like 'He's In Town' anymore.

I like the Rockin' Berries version of He's In Town better than the original. It has a nice folk-rock feel to it.

"so after pepper"
to be honest the beatles came up wth a few clever titles before pepper. be interesting to know who came up with the very first clever title. was it rubber soul?
