here's a couple of trailers: youtu.be/qTbmrbGEKz0youtu.be/Bo8FSy393dQlooks like it exists in two versions: al directing wilde's play and al directing himself directing wilde's play (bit like an "in search of oscar". like he did with richard the third probably). this stuff is more or less unwatchable unless you're a film student, studying literature at university, a masochist. an al pacino completist, you want to see jessica chastain's tits... there's nothing wrong with the play, by the way, i remember seeing a wonderful tv version in the late 60s/early 70s. very thought provoking, very erotic. it can be done but probably not by al. here's a campy version by ken russell from 1988 (i think there does have to be an element of camp to make the play work but ken overdoes it, of course): www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMO4Qi4AFhc

this week's on the beat is well worth checking out. first half guest is rod davis of the quarrymen, nothing new there but some nice stories anyway... second half guest is gianni russo who played carlo rizzi, the psycho son-in-law in the godfather. don't know how much of what he says is bullshit but a lot of the stories would be verging on the slanderous if he were talking about the living. lots of sinatra, dino and godfather gossip. great listening: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0244kwdlisten now cos it's only available for the next 6 days.

reading the comments to that marvelettes song takes you through the supremes (first recorded by) to ronnie and the relatives (possibly influenced by their i want a boy) to, i guess, phil spector. i wonder if phil turned them on to the song?

interesting sunday night at the london palladium episode with - at 14 mins 19 secs - the john barry seven live playing the theme from juke box jury and then backing adam faith for a couple of numbers. in the john barry line-up is the famous 50s/60s session guitarist vic flick ( from wiki: Flick was a session player, featured on many early 1960s UK pop records. Flick was a member of the George Martin Orchestra, playing on the soundtrack of the film A Hard Day's Night). on piano is les reed who later wrote a shitload of hits including delilah, it's not unusual, the last waltz, a kind of hush. it's not rock and roll but it is a little bit of kitsch english pop history: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ki9e_LUZ8dY

river phoenix: great genius dies of drug induced heart failure heath ledger: great genius dies from abuse of prescription medicines philip seymour hoffman: great genius overdoses on heroin
all these actors who kill themselves with drugs seem to become great geniuses overnight for some reason.

great video. she's the same age as boby but her voice is in better shape. boby does a similar dance when he's playing his guitar solos.
