That We Are the World is great, except there was no Bob imitator. I'm sure it woud have been just brutal. What a letdown!

watching those beefheart clips i kept thinking... tom waits. even down to the hat and wacky interview technique.

yeah i can see that. the voice is very similar too. i think tom said somewhere that after he heard trout mask, it changed the musical direction of his next album which was trombone
just checked it - it was his wife who introduced him to trout

and the funny thing is, i think exactly the same about both tom waits and beefheart. interesting and clever, but it's not music.

The wiki entry on Beefheart says that he's now living in Humboldt County in northern California (where all the good weed gets grown) and has been bedridden for some time now. I liked his line 'you used me like an ashtray heart'. Here's a song of his that I've always liked from his Clear Spot record My Head is My Only House Unless It Rains. It's different from his usual screaming abba dabba tirade routine. I pretty much agree with nick on Beefheart. He's more of a concept that people like to identify with than a guy who made good music. All the Beefheart/Zappa guys that I grew up with never listen to that stuff anymore....it was kind of a cool guy adolescent thing I think.

here's a little footnote to the beefheart story. we had our own cap'n over in england in the early 70s. edgar broughton. he had the growl, he had the attitude, he even had the hat but cos he had so much hair the only hat that would fit him was a bob hope/paleface style ten gallon. not cool. i sat on the stage at liverpool university and watched him once (though i obviously didn't join in with the chants). here's his big (only) hit. out demons out: www.sendspace.com/file/oljffe

"De reggae become the crazy disco mon!" hehe im just going through some of beef's albums at the moment. safe as milk is good. i'm glad doesnt have the abba dabba thing either and its a great tune. almost motown. seems like he just went out of his way to be weird and different like zappa. im going on to trout mask next. apparently you have to listen to it at least 6 times before you "get it". all the reviews on amazon are either 5 stars or 1 star. he just does his own thing and doesnt give a fuck. like neil i guess.

that canvey island pub rock stuff was mostly just three chord thrashing but one or two strange things did come out of it. check out these guys. the kursaal flyers, little does she know: www.sendspace.com/file/3k689ebit of everything in there: elvis costello, queen, zappa, deaf school... they could even have preceded a couple of those guys.

Not bad, but at 5:26 it goes on 3 minutes too long, so fuck them.

here's the 1961 original of please stay by the drifters: www.sendspace.com/file/vhwj2wcould be one of the few records where the cover - by the crying shames, produced by joe meek - is better than the original.

Omnibus did a Joe Meek documentary years ago....Joe's older brother said that 'Please Stay' was his favorite Joe production. I didn't know it was a Drifters song.
