"There is an acoustic in there, but it's pretty low in the mix. I think the dominate instruments on the track are two electric guitars (one playing the riffs--including that neat little glissando on the verses) and Paul's bass."
i wouldn't be so sure. a gibson jumbo with the right strings and put through an amp sounds pretty much like an electric guitar if you're doing those little licks and chunky downstrokes and not just strumming it folk style.
it was recorded on 17th october 1963 along with the b side, this boy, which was almost totally acoustic. it wouldn't surprise me if they did the guitar parts for hold your hand with the same guitars they were using that day for this boy.
anyway, listening to the song a few times today it's a fucking work of art. a minimalist classic. basically there is no guitar on it at all. it's all bass, harmony and handclaps. mcdonald has all four beatles doing the handclaps. as it should be.
it all went downhill after this. including hard day's night.

there is nothing like it the first time you hear it. like a bomb going off. even more so than rolling stone.

forget to mention the drums. sorry, ritchie.
the stones and the who had great ones but maybe the beatles had the greatest rhythm section in the history of popular music.

here's the version from the new across the universe film: www.sendspace.com/file/fu2h5cit's by someone called T.V. Carpio. not bad. sounds like the version of viva las vegas in the big lebowski. you can't really go wrong covering a beatles number. cos they're all great songs. that's why all the boby projects fail. the songs can only be performed by dylan. cos they're not songs really. they're something, but they're not songs.

What version are you listening to? I can bung a bunch up if you wanna. You're probably not gonna hear a lot of difference.
The beginning of I Want To Hold Your Hand....were they the first power chords? What a series of singles--Please Please Me, She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Those singles were never bettered. Sure there were genius things to follow like Ticket to Ride, but those first ones still have that visceral thing, whereas songs like Rain are more mental.

all the mp3s i can get hold of are stereo. could you post a mono uk version and a mono usa version? even the version on "one" is stereo for some reason. paul's idea probablly, so you can hear his bass part better.

thanks. that sounds about a thousand times better. here's the stereo version that everybody who isn't a nerd collector listens to: www.sendspace.com/file/0ubns7listen to that technnical fluff at about 6 seconds when the voice comes in. and the separation of the instruments detracts from the power of the sound. bring back mono!

PS I Love You was a killer B side too--much better than Love Me Do which was basically cowboy crap.

Memorabia dept--Extremely rare and expensive: "This is considered by most collectors to be the ultimate piece to own of all commercial Beatles memorabilia. The 4-speed 17-1/2" x 10" x 6" NEMS record player was manufactered in 1964 and only 5000 were made. Very few survived, making it the most sought after item of Beatles memorabilia. So far only one or two mint or near mint units have turned up - the majority that have surfaced are in worn condition". More info here.

interesting quote from the Mojo beatles book: "John and George - you'd always see them there in the front watching Tony's [sheridan] every move, you know. They'd copied him. They really did copy a lot of his moves; the way of playing; you know, the stand; and John especially stood just like Tony" Tony is far right.

That quote s kind of interesting, owen. Who said it? Just downloaded a bootleg that included this version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand." It's supposedly a stereo Australian mix. Don't know about that, but it is quite different from the others (and I still think those are electric guitars). www.sendspace.com/file/umsd7s
