Lots of things have been written about the Altamont fesival, but until I came across this download at Hunger City Altamont--The Rest if It, I knew nothing of CSNY's appearance except for the fact that they were on the bill. They were nowhere to be found on the Gimme Shelter movie, and I have yet to see any photos of them from that show.
Now we have a partial audience tape from that big day--let's take a peek at what Cros & Co were puttin' down at the Speedway.

Black Queen
Good god this is awful. It's just a bad song. Actually, it's more than just a bad song--it's fucking emblematic of how low music sunk in a short period of time. You could bookend The Beatles last show at Candlestick and Black Queen at Altamont and call it 'The Stink Settles In'. These pop stars figured all you had to do is play some dogdunce blues guitar riff on repeat, turn it up and howl, call it 'heavy' and the cunts will lap it up. They were right. All those saucer eyed poncho wearing putzes in the pit blissfully soaked this shit in. Stephen Stills has written 2 or 3 good songs. Other than that, he's a pantload.
Pre-Road Downs
You get some ambience here with some crowd noises and someone close to the taper yelling 'sit down!'. You gotta laff right? This guy is at Altamont and he wants people to sit down? I could see this guy at ground zero on September 11 waving his arms around saying 'can someone do something about all this dust?!' Whatta pantload.
Long Time Gone
This incomplete tape doesn't tell us if the Altamont crowd was treated to 'Helplessy Hoping' or 'Suite Judy Blue Eyes', but we can now be certain that Long Time Gone was played. This makes David Crosby pantload #3.
Down By The River
This is a partial recording. The only thing we can ascertain from this snippet is that Neil Young hung out with pantloads.
So big thanks to The Grateful Dead for recommending those knuckle dragging mouth breathing Hell's Angels to The Rolling Stones to act as security. They set the template for training Bill Graham Productions employees for the seventies and eighties.
Be sure to hide the roaches.
