Whistler & His Jug Band--Foldin' Bed on YouTube May 25, 1930
A while back, owen posted this video. I couldn't stop watching it. I did a little digging and found out that more film from this day was around. Thirteen whole minutes! Well, almost. Anyway, I present--
Whistler & His Jug Band--The Raw Footage
This footage was originally part of a newsreel. Supposedly this was filmed at Churchill Downs in Louisville KY. It looks like there are horse stables in the background, although only donkeys and cows can be seen in the raw footage.
The Emptiest Jug Has a Tune In It
Down in Kentucky negroes get liquid notes out of gallon containers that went dry long ago.
The news cameras did a few takes of the guys performing 'Foldin' Bed'. Sad thing is that for most of Part 1 the cameramen decided to film donkeys and cows while the best jug band in Louisville was playing.
Part 2 is almost 7 minutes of pure raw jug joy.
What the hell are they singing about though? I couldn't understand a word. I did some more digging and found a recording of the original 78 of 'Foldin' Bed' by the boys. I was hoping that the studio version would provide decipherable lyrics. No such luck. These jug guys did different lyrics on the record. Who do they think they are with that? Back to the drawing board. Here is my rough transcription of the lyrics to the newsreel version of 'Foldin' Bed':
Went downtown to have a little fun, bought myself a racer/ Shiny gun?
Carried it home, laid it on the shelf, got so doggone hard not to get it myself
Come on down to that foldin' bed, I believe I'll tear it down
Oh baby, throw it down
<--------->
I got home about 4 o'clock
Knocked on the door and found it locked
Down to the window and I took a peek
<---------> there fast asleep
<-------->foldin' bed, I believe I'll tear it down
Oh baby, throw it down
<------------>
<----------------> on the side of the wall
Come on down to that foldin' bed
I believe I'm gonna tear it down
I've been on this for about a month and a half and I really still have no idea what this song is about. Sometimes when a guy tries to take a closer look he comes up with dick. Any help would be appreciated. Where's lorenzo? He's from Kentucky....maybe he knows the lingo.
