Once the Stones and Smokey Robinson really hit their stride, and then you throw in Bob and the Byrds and the Who and so on, I'll bet there'll be some weeks when the Beatles don't come out on top.

But okay, my non-Beatles pick among this lot would be Wild One, though the Animals' Boom Boom is up there with the Stones' Little Red Rooster and there are surprisingly good Four Tops and Buddy Holly covers in the mix too.

'Promised Land'--sez here:
Berry wrote this when he was serving time in jail for transporting a girl across state lines for immoral purposes. He had to borrow an atlas of the US from the prison library to plot his hero's journey from Virginia to California.

Those post jail Chuck songs were pretty good...'Promised Land', 'You Never Can Tell' and my fave Chucky tune 'Nadine' all came after his Mann Act prison time.

Huge impact on pop culture this. Knowing this song was a prerequisite in elementary school. To this day....I was watching a load of Trailer Park Boys episodes....I found out that the Randy character's last name was 'Bo-Bandy'.

The Honeycombs - I Can't Stop
This followup to their hit 'Have I The Right' tried too hard to repeat the sound of the previous single. Here's the better
version of this tune complete with trademark Joe Meek tough guy compression.

Sounds Orchestral - Cast Your Fate To the Wind
'Sounds Orchestral' did chart with this version, but the keeper is Vince Guaraldi's original rendition.

I'll have to go with David's pick as well--Harvey easily wins the week with 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'.

You watch Trailer Park Boys? Have your friends and family noticed that you're turning into a Canadian? Are they planning an intervention?

The Name Game . . . same story at my elementary school. Not knowing how to rhyme your name put you firmly in the awkward squad.

SK hipped me to the Trailer Park Boys a while back. No one in the US seems to know about them. The 'smart' video rental stores around here don't have a clue. The TPB characters and their relationships to each other make for deep comedy.

loving feeling is even greater if you experienced it first time round. it's one of those very few songs that you remember where you where when you heard it for the first time. or at least you remember the few weeks it was on the radio all day long and you have specific memories of humming it on the bus and stuff. i remember snow. bitter cold hands. waiting for the bus to go to work at 6.30 in the morning in the freezing fog. but feelin' good anyway.

still got played a lot on radio years after its release. for people who werent around in 64, its one of those songs you here pretty soon after you're born so you cant remember a time when you didnt know it. according to bmi it was the most played song on American radio and television of the 20c.
