But there are a bunch of other pretty good singles here: All the Love I've Got, Tell Laura I Love Her, The Teacher, Just Like That, Impazzivo per te, There's Something On Your Mind, Is a Bluebird Blue?, Trouble in Paradise and One Last Kiss. There's also a decent cover of Oh Carol from Holland and a couple of Brit songs (Angela Jones and That's Love) that aren't too bad if you're in the right mood. Another fine week.

Pick of the week: I'll go with So Fine, Be Mine (Mr. Edward Cochran on guitar), followed closely by I've Been Loved before and Cut Across Shorty. I must have grown soft hearted (or perhaps soft headed) during my time away, but I like a lot of the other singles in this batch. None of them are great, but I thought these were kind of cool: Question, Pilou Pilou hé, Dion's nifty cover of In the Still of the Night, Romantica, Lonely Guy, Coriandoli, Is a Blue Bird Blue?, Bad Man Blunder, Valentino, Cat Nip, Prends mon coeur (Pet Clark's French take on A Fool Such As I), Cruise to the Moon, One More Time, The Key's in the Mailbox, Oh oh Rosy, and even the Garry Miles version of Look for a Star. Of course, by far the biggest hit here was Itsy Bitsy Teenie weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, but even I have limits . . .

It's not that all these songs are masterpieces, but my discovery of a whole bunch of new charts has opened the door to the world of regional hits, singles that would be bigger hits for other people, a bunch of cool covers, one offs, B-sides and oddities . . . and I love 'em. Pop music radio c.1960 must have been a hell of a lot of fun to listen to even if the best songs weren't half as good as the stream of brilliant singles that came out in 1956-7 or would arrive in 1964-5.

Pick of the week: I guess it has to be The Twist, but the question is which version. Hank Ballard got there first, but Chubby Checker's cheerful cover is the one that sold a gazillion copies. I think they're both pretty great. Elvis' classic It's Now or Never takes second while Freddy Fender's great Wasted Days and Wasted Nights has to settle for third, just ahead of a clutch of great singles: Just Like That, Just in Time, The Blamers, Worried Life Blues and Anymore. Pick of the week: Tonight’s the Night is the class of the field by a long way, which doesn't mean there isn't a bunch of cool singles in this batch. I Know takes second, with Southern Love and Honky Tonk Girl tying for third.

Rock It is fabulous, as much for the nifty footage as for the song.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the Aussie pop, a bunch of loving knock offs and covers of US rock & roll, mostly c. 1957. Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport is in a different category. A novelty song that would travel to North America a few years later. It's okay, I guess. What's with that "Let my abos go loose, Bruce" line? Isn't "abos" short for aborigines in an n-word kind of way? Is the guy freeing his slaves? And is the line as racist as it sounds? Interesting kids' songs they have Down Under . . .

Don Costa's version of Never on Sunday is probably the worst major version of it, but the song is indestructible and even buried under Costa's arrangement remains kind of catchy.

As for Yogi . . . what the hell?

And True Love Ways is better than any of them, but I don't think it was actually a single. It charted on a Texas station that was probably still playing Buddy tributes.

the shirelles bang out the relative minor vamp once again - G to Em. its used in baby its you and a load of other songs from this time. id go as far to say it was the most popular songwriting trick of the time - the beatles used it 4 or 5 times on the first album.

the amount of re-hashing of 50s tunes is outrageous this week - its possible without the british invasion the american songwriters would have endlessly repeated themselves ad infinitum
