here ya go: www.sendspace.com/file/y8fpz2well my assertion was based on the fact that I listen to their version more than the Beatles - its like a speeded up acid version, but this could all change tomorrow...

My letter on strypes is published in current nme. (with their response). it struck me that they are the first band since the stones in 62 to make an impact in london from playing covers

aaron neville's over you is a great track - has that "shop around" feel to it
"no shoes on my feet, no food upon my table" - hooker on top form on this one
kudos to Mr Vee for keeping up the doo wop chord changes

syd was musically literate and was usually interested in making a good tune out of his meanderings...ayers had zero musical ability so was heavily reliant on the stoned culture of the day for success.

"they're great, unbelievable and they look totally cool"
dave grohl - everytime he opens his mouth its some variation of this statement and now he's jumping on the strypes bandwagon.
if you think some of the elder statesmen of rock are kinda dorks now, just think what it will be like in another 10 years

"Haha--they snuck the 'Ring of Fire' riff in there."
and check out the layers of bo diddley riffs...so much to love in one tune.

the amount of re-hashing of 50s tunes is outrageous this week - its possible without the british invasion the american songwriters would have endlessly repeated themselves ad infinitum

the spaniels song is gold. you can hear some of "bring it all home" in there
the shirelles bang out the relative minor vamp once again - G to Em. its used in baby its you and a load of other songs from this time. id go as far to say it was the most popular songwriting trick of the time - the beatles used it 4 or 5 times on the first album.

Tony Sheridan bites the big one
His part in the fabs story is kinda incalculable since everyone was young and off their heads

yea i agree with most of that. they peaked long before the english rock aristocracy even heard of them. when i saw them first in cavan they were playing a great mix of stuff. they did the best version of "rain" by anyone, weller included. (i think i posted the mp3 here before). then all of a sudden they just concentrated solely on the "r&b" stuff. while live they are pretty impressive, musically they go up a cul da sac of 12 bar blues. now they will tell you that the rolling stones started out doing nothing else and it did them no harm. (although they were into more soulful stuff like arthur alexander and marvin gaye as well) part of me writes them off at this stage but i dont wanna put my neck over the line. i was gettin worried that they might paint themselves into a corner and then i heard the guitar player singing this , a pretty decent acoustic song: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxdpd8kOD_sand the drummer talking about hank williams which i was surprised at. i do accept they are a novelty coz of their age and that may be why gallagher and weller and co dig them , when they start growing beards they will really have to prove their worth. one things for sure, if they dont make great new music in the next few years then it will tell us something about the limitations on new music, that 98% of it has been done already and there is little or no scope for great original stuff. (until some mad nut comes along that is, but those guys are unlikely to be signed up anytime soon)

now or never was presleys biggest selling single of all time
the fireballs track long long ponytail is pretty nifty too, features the same rhythm guitar style that lennon used.
jack scott - i seem to remember boby used to do a great version of one of his tunes.

the "tomorrow will be too late" line in now or never is another big moment musically from this era. here it at the end of if i fell (if if fell in love with you)
wasted days is a nice re-write of "send me some lovin"
