what marks holly out is the work he put in the vocals. only little richard comes close. the beatles obviously put a lot of work into the harmonies but thats slightly different...lead singer doing crazy vocal stuff..ended in 1959.

best track at the moment - listen to meThat's a special one for me too. I love the guitar sound. It's a faraway ghost sound. My fave budy song is 'Well All Right'. It's just a perfect sounding record. I also think that the apartment tape is right up there in the high holy art pantheon with The Sun Sessions or the Robert Johnson sessions or anything you could name. I have some old budypix on my fotobucket that I might as well stick here.... Bumming on bus-- w/Elvis kinda--

cool. particularily liked the photo booth ones which i never saw before. well all right is a fairly innovative piece of work. the phrase comes from an encounter with little richard.
that makes it tough is like a blues pop song, again budy breaking new ground. the vocals are a balls grabber.

I'm ashamed. I'm ashamed to admit I had no idea "Well alright" is Buddy's song. But then again, I'm from Eastern Europe and we're all fucked up a bit here, still have a lot of catching up to do. First heard the song in the "Blind Faith in Hyde park" film, they've opened their first-ever gig with it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-UZ2uE18ws... and I'm seeing Slowhand & Winwood this summer in Beograd, and they still open their concerts with this song, great... Speaking of Eastern Europe, the first Beatle to play there was Paul with his Wings in 1976 - and it just happened to be in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, my ex-country, now Croatia, hard to explain that, but anyway... just discovered the boot! The crowd is super wild, it's tragi-comic; they're clapping along even on Yesterday, but Paul seemed to enjoy it, as you can see from the liner notes:

There was a quote from Buddy's drummer in the book that came with the box set that revealed he got the paradiddle drumming idea for Peggy Sue from a Jaye P. Morgan song called 'Dawn'. I tracked it down and it sounds like this: Dawn--Jaye P. MorganI luv budy so much that I even like songs that imitate him. Here's one of my faves, My Baby Doll--Mike Berry--a gem production from that nutjob Joe Meek who was also queer for budy.

Yeah, I must confess I really like the overdubbed that makes it tough (the one that sounds like it could be on Blonde on Blonde)
It's such a pleasure listening to all this - both he and Sam Cooke have been really ill-served by basic Pop History 101 - they get respectful footnotes when they were obviously bona fide originals, geniuses and phenomenons (Buddy even more than Sam)
(I am currently loving the slow Slippin and Slidin)
EDITED TO ADD: I like that Blind Faith version of Well Alright a lot

the slow Slippin and Slidin
Some notes from the Purple Chick Complete Buddy set: 1-20 January, 1959--Apartment 4-H, The Breevort, 8th St. NYC 'Buddy deliberately recorded 'Slippin & Slidin' at a slow tempo, with the tape running at half speed (7 1/2 i.p.s versus 15 i.p.s.) so they would sound like The Chipmunks when played back'.
