i think italy's tactic was to get to penalties in all the knockout rounds. unfortunately, donadoni never counted on the fact that your own players have to shoot at the opposition goal and score to win shootouts.

the sad fact is just the opposite. donadoni thought he could make the group of useless cunts he inherited from lippi play attractive attacking football (like he and his mates did with milan in the late 80s/early 90s). it was the football equivalent of trying to cram a large square block into a minute round hole. this group of italian players just don't understand what attractive attacking football means. winning at any cost they understand. ear piercing they understand. tv advertising they understand. glib excuses for being totally useless cunts they understand only too well.

italy today: no place for a baggio, a zola, a cassano... just toy soldiers. they looked about as good as ireland: mid-table premier league with a dash of championship.

ireland has no place for a few great premiership players either for some reason. neither team will get too far. then again, there arent that many great international teams.

couple of firsts for luton town today, one local and one universal:
"This is the first time in 89 years that the club has lost its league status, and the first time that any club has dropped from the Championship to the Conference in successive seasons"
black day for the gopher.

african nations cup news...
he bbc site has togo tucked in in third place after the second round of games:
1 Ivory Coast 2 1 1 0 3 1 2 4 2 Burkina Faso 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 3 Togo 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 Ghana 1 0 0 1 1 3 -2 0
one more bad game by ghana and burkina faso lose 3 points for playing a suspended player and togo could qualify in second place.

"The most interesting guy I ever met was the ex-soccer player Jimmy Johnstone, from Celtic. What a character: the voices, the rhythms, the speech patterns… and he'd sing to me like Neil Diamond. He'd drink and come on to women. I named a dog after him"
Robert Duvall (in today's Observer)
