one of the bad things about the internet is that however tiny and irrelevant your fame was you get treated like a lost genius when you finally kick it. kevin ayres died a few days ago and i read a couple of the obits and thought, hey, how come i don't have any of his stuff in my collection? i know all about him, i was surrounded by friends with his albums in the late 60s but i don't seem to be able to remember a single song he recorded.
so i went to the internet and downloaded joy of a toy and things became clear. it's like some albert grossman figure hears the first couple of pink floyd albums and sgt pepper and thinks, that's what selling, i should get a piece of that. so he finds this autistic adolescent and locks him up in his bedroom with a bongo, a spliff, a stylophone and a kazoo and says, go to it kid, see what you can come up with.
the difference between syd barrett and ayres is that syd produced a load of self-indulgent genius while ayres produced a load of self-indulgent shite.
so now i know why i have no ayres in my collection. and i have the internet to thank for that. i guess it's not all bad.

syd was musically literate and was usually interested in making a good tune out of his meanderings...ayers had zero musical ability so was heavily reliant on the stoned culture of the day for success.

I only knew of him via the 'ACNE' (Ayers, Cale, Nico, Eno) June 1974 live record. His was the side that nobody ever played.

Billy Joel played on the first demo recording of Remember (Walking in the Sand) and recalled that Morton "had a very theatrical way of producing; he used to wear a cape in the studio and was very intimidating to a young kid like me" www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/feb/17/george-shadow-morton

Slim Whitman is out of here. "I don't think you've ever heard anything bad about me, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'd like my son (Bryon) to remember me as a good dad. I'd like the people to remember me as having a good voice and a clean suit."Fuckin' A! Una Paloma Blanca on YouTube

I don't usually stick personal things in here, but my comic book store guy died last week. This was him in his store. That little bit of white tiled floor space was all there was to walk around on. I used to think the Simpsons character Comic Book Guy was based on him, but probably not. He'd call me on the phone any time new Crumb stuff came into the store. Gary was the one who originally advised me to lower my standards. The guys from Metallica and The Flaming Groovies would stop in all the time, and if you hung out at Gary's store for any amount of time, you'd end up meeting all the Zap comic artists coming and going. This is best obit I found: www.tcj.com/no-longer-of-this-planet-gary-arlington-1938-2014/
